Good News!Good News always brightens our day, but this Good News we have will do much more, for it opens the door to Eternity! The Good News we have for you actually begins with bad news! The bad news is that God doesn't grade on a curve. Entrance into heaven is on a pass-fail basis.... and we all fail. As the Scriptures say, No one is good — not even one. No one has real understanding; no one is seeking God. All have turned away from God; all have gone wrong. — Romans 3:10-12Unfortunately, there's more bad news. Not only can't we earn our way to heaven by being good enough, God holds us accountable for our wrong-doing. For the wages of sin is death.... — Romans 6:23aThis "death" is eternal death, eternal separation from God after we die. Yet, along with this bad news is good news, coming in this same verse: ...but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord. — Romans 6:23bGod offers us a gift. It is free. However, it must be received — God will not force it on anyone. When we reach out by faith through prayer and receive this gift from God, we are fully and freely and forever forgiven of the guilt and penalty of our transgressions against God. More than this, we are adopted into God's family and guaranteed an eternal home in heaven! For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. God did not send his Son into the world to condemn it, but to save it. &mdash John 3:16–17What's the catch? Well, there is a catch, for this "free" gift is expensive. It is so costly that God had to send His one and only Son to pay for the gift. When Jesus was dying on the cross, He experienced the wrath of God against our sin. For Jesus — the innocent lamb of God — this gift was terribly expensive. But for us, it is free because Jesus paid the full price. Now isn't that Good News! It's even better than that. Once we receive this gift of forgiveness, we enter a never-ending discovery of God many kindnesses and pleasant surprises as He prepares us for our eternal home in heaven. How does one receive this gift? It is not enough to believe in God or believe in the existence of this gift; one must receive the gift. There's no formula, or special words, or prayer, for what counts is faith. Therefore, since we have been made right in God's sight by faith, we have peace with God because of what Jesus Christ our Lord has done for us. Because of our faith, Christ has brought us into this place of highest privilege where we now stand and we confidently and joyfully look forward to sharing God's glory. — Romans 5:1–2You can respond to this Good News right now by talking directly to God and telling Him that you know you fall short of His holy standards and are in need of forgiveness and in need of a Savior. In your own words, ask Jesus Christ to be your Savior by affirming your belief in His death on the cross for you, by opening your heart to Him for His life-changing power to enter in and by yielding to His will for your life. This Good News keeps on getting better. We hope you take this step of personal faith and trust in Jesus Christ as your Savior today! What this means is that those who become Christians become new persons. They are not the same anymore, for the old life is gone. A new life has begun! All this newness of life is from God, who brought us back to himself through what Christ did. — 2 Corinthians 5:17–18
